The first thing you need to decide upon is the proper height. Most stools were originally all 30 inches tall. This is the height of all of the ”pub” stools that we are all familiar with. More recently, bar stools have been made available in a lower 24 inch height. This shorter type of stool is perfect for children, people with mobility problems or at breakfast bars. Both barstool heights are readily available and most styles are offered in your choice of height. The shorter versions tend to be less visually obtrusive and fit well in small spaces.
30” bar stools are commonly used for a raised eating surface in the 40 to 42 inch height range. Many homes and apartments today are built with a standard 36” high counter, then have a back splash and raised eating area. In most circumstances, if the eating area is HIGHER than your standard kitchen counter, you will need a 30” stool. 34” and larger bar stools are used for counters that exceed 42” in height. Please double check your measurements before ordering a 34” seat height. These are common enough for manufacturers to produce them, but most customers will need a bar stool in the 24” to 30” range.
Saddle stools are among the most diverse stools out there, and break away from the traditional office stool mold with its distinct seat shape. A saddle stool features a different way of sitting with its seat shaped in the form of a saddle similar to one that you would see on a horse’s back. This seating option works best for dentist or medical offices where the ability to sit in one sturdy position is helpful. For example, when a dentist is cleaning a patient’s teeth and wants to stay in one place without having to slide around to get comfortable, a saddle stool would definitely be of use. With seat height adjustment and seat angle adjustment, saddle stools are also an ergonomic option as they have quite a few adjustments and aid the user in sitting with proper posture.
Getting bar stools of the right height is a crucial factor. It will assure you the most convenient and comfortable sitting experience because you will have the optimal leg space between the counter and the stools. To achieve that, first measure the height from the bottom of the counter to the floor. Then deduct 10” to 12” from this number. This will give you the height the stools should have. So, for example, if your counter is 36” in height (which is a standard counter height), you should go for 24”- 26” stools. If you have a counter with a raised eating area, measure the distance from the bottom of the eating surface to the floor and then deduct the 10”- 12” to get the right height for your stools.
